Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life. – John 5:24
Jesus does not describe eternal life as something waiting for us at the end of our earthly lives. He speaks of it as a present reality for the person who hears His word and believes the Father who sent Him. Even now, that person has crossed over from death to life.
Hearing Jesus requires more than listening
Jesus begins with hearing. That sounds simple, but in Scripture, hearing is more than allowing words to reach our ears. His words call for a response. We can read what He says, know what He taught, and even admire His wisdom without actually trusting Him. The hearing Jesus speaks about is the kind that receives His word and takes Him seriously.
That is why He joins hearing with believing. The two belong together. His word tells us who He is and what God has done, while faith receives that word as true. We stop standing at a distance and place our trust in Him.
A remarkable promise
Jesus says that the one who hears and believes has eternal life. He does not say that eternal life begins only after death. He speaks of something that is already true. Faith in Christ brings us into a new relationship with God now, even though we are still waiting for the fullness of what He has promised.
There is also a freedom in the rest of His words: “will not come under judgment.” The person who trusts Christ is not waiting anxiously to find out whether God will finally accept him. Jesus gives a promise strong enough to rest in. Our standing with God does not depend on how well we manage to prove ourselves, but on the One we have believed.
From death to life
Then Jesus uses an image that is difficult to make any smaller: “he has crossed over from death to life.” It is a change of realm, not merely an improvement in circumstances.
That changes the way we look at our faith. Following Jesus is not simply becoming a better version of ourselves. It is receiving life that we could never create for ourselves. The Shepherd does not merely point us toward life and leave us to find our own way there. He brings us across.
And notice that Jesus speaks of this crossing as something already accomplished for the believer. There may still be weakness, questions, struggles, and days when faith feels small. But our feelings do not undo His promise. The life Christ gives is not held together by the strength of our grip on Him. It rests on His word.
Keep listening to His word
That makes our time in Scripture more than a religious habit. When we open God’s Word, we are not simply collecting information about Jesus. We are listening to the One who calls us to trust Him.
Some days we may come to Scripture with a clear mind and a ready heart. Other days we may come tired, distracted, or unsure. We can still listen. We can still believe. We can still rest in what Jesus has said.
John 5:24 leaves us with a simple and steady hope: those who hear Jesus and believe the Father who sent Him have eternal life. They have already crossed over from death to life. That is not a promise we have to manufacture through greater effort. It is a gift to receive with humble faith.
