Now it is God who secures both us and you in Christ. He anointed us, placed His seal on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a pledge of what is to come. – 2 Corinthians 1:21-22

It is easy to think of our relationship with God as something we have to keep holding onto. We try to remain faithful, keep our hearts in the right place, and somehow make sure we do not lose what God has given us. But Paul points our attention in a different direction. The security of our life in Christ begins with what God has done, not with how well we manage to hold on.

Who is the one securing us?

Paul does not say that we secure ourselves in Christ. He says, “Now it is God who secures both us and you in Christ.” That changes the way we think about faith.

There is certainly a call to obedience. There are times when we need to repent, persevere, and choose faithfulness. But underneath all of that is something we did not accomplish for ourselves. God is the One who brought us into Christ and continues to hold us there.

That is a reassuring place to stand. A sheep does not become secure because it has figured out how to protect itself. It is secure because it has a shepherd. Our confidence is ultimately not in the strength of our grip on God, but in His faithfulness toward us.

What does it mean that God has placed His seal on us?

Paul gives us three striking words: God anointed us, sealed us, and put His Spirit in our hearts.

A seal identifies ownership and establishes authenticity. It says that something belongs to the one who placed the seal upon it. Paul is reminding these believers that their identity is not something they have to continually negotiate with the world around them. God has marked them as His own.

That matters because so much of life can make us question where we belong. We can be defined by our failures, our accomplishments, other people’s opinions, or even by seasons when our faith feels weak. But none of those things gets the final word about who we are.

God has placed His seal on those who are in Christ.

Why did God give us His Spirit?

Paul goes one step further. God has put His Spirit in our hearts “as a pledge of what is to come.” The Spirit is not merely evidence that God was present at some point in our past. His presence is a promise concerning our future. There is something still ahead.

We have not yet experienced everything God has promised. We still live in a world where suffering is real, our faith can be tested, and we sometimes struggle to understand what God is doing. Yet the presence of His Spirit reminds us that our story is not finished.

God has already given us a foretaste of what is coming.

That gives Christian hope a different foundation. Hope is not simply optimism about how circumstances might turn out. It rests on the character of the God who has already acted on our behalf. The same God who secured us in Christ has given us His Spirit as a pledge that what He has promised will not remain unfinished.

What can we rest in today?

Perhaps we need to spend less time asking whether we are strong enough to keep ourselves secure and more time remembering who has secured us.

God has not left us to wander through this life trying to prove that we belong to Him. In Christ, He has claimed us, sealed us, and given us His Spirit. We can still stumble. We can still have days when our faith feels small. But our weakness does not make God less faithful. So when uncertainty comes, remember where your security begins It begins with God. And the God who has begun this work has already given you His Spirit as a pledge of what is still to come. Take comfort in that today.

God has not forgotten you. He has placed His seal on you, and He is faithful to His promise.
