Therefore you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household. – Ephesians 2:19
Paul describes what has changed for those who belong to Christ. He does not simply say that we have been forgiven or brought near to God. He says we have been given a place in a household. The stranger is no longer a stranger.
You Have a Place Here
Paul’s words are remarkably personal: “members of God’s household.” A household is more than a place you are allowed to enter. It is a place where you belong.
That distinction matters. We can be welcomed into a room and still feel like visitors. We can know that we are permitted to stay while wondering whether we truly belong. But Paul gives believers a much stronger word. In Christ, we are not outsiders who have been granted temporary access to God. We have become members of His household.
The gospel does not merely bring us closer to God. It gives us a home with Him.
No Longer Strangers
The word “strangers” carries the feeling of being unfamiliar, disconnected, or without a rightful place. Paul says that is no longer our position.
There may still be moments when life makes us feel like we do not quite fit. We may feel out of place among people, uncertain about where we are going, or even unsure of ourselves. Those feelings are real, but they do not define our standing before God.
Our belonging rests somewhere deeper than our circumstances or emotions. Christ has made us members of God’s household.
That is a quiet truth to carry when we feel unsettled. We may not always know where we fit in this world, but we can know where we belong to God.
A Household Full of Belonging
Paul also calls believers “fellow citizens with the saints.” Our belonging is not solitary. God gathers His people together into one household and gives them a shared identity.
There is humility in this. None of us enters God’s household because we have earned a place through our goodness or worthiness. We come because God has brought us near through Christ. Our place is grace.
And that changes the way we look at other believers, too. If God has welcomed us into His household, we are not the only ones with a place at the table. The saints around us are fellow citizens and fellow members of the household. We belong together because God has made room for us all.
Live From the Place God Has Given You
Perhaps the most comforting thing about this verse is that belonging is not presented as something we must continually prove. Paul speaks of what we are: no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens and members of God’s household.
So today, you do not have to live as though you are still standing outside the door.
You belong to God. You have been welcomed into His household. And when the world leaves you feeling uncertain about where you fit, you can return to this simple truth: in Christ, you are no longer a stranger. You are home.
