Nevertheless, we must live up to what we have already attained. – Philippians 3:16

Have you ever wondered if you’re missing something in your walk with Christ? It’s easy to think that spiritual growth always requires learning something new. Yet Philippians 3:16 reminds us that God also calls us to faithfully live out the truth He has already placed in our hearts. Before seeking the next lesson, we should ask ourselves if we are walking in obedience to what we already know.

What does Philippians 3:16 teach us about growing in faith?

The apostle Paul encourages believers to keep moving forward according to the spiritual ground they have already gained. Every Christian begins with the life-changing truth of the gospel. Jesus gave His life on the cross, rose again, and offers forgiveness and eternal life to everyone who believes in Him. That foundation never changes.

Like sheep who learn to recognize the voice of their shepherd, we grow by continually responding to the One who leads us. Spiritual maturity is not measured only by how much Bible knowledge we collect. It is also seen in our willingness to trust and obey the Lord in everyday life.

How can we apply Philippians 3:16 in everyday life?

Sometimes we unintentionally make the Christian life more complicated than it needs to be. Sermons, books, podcasts, Bible studies, and worship music are wonderful gifts from God. They help us learn and encourage our hearts. Yet they are meant to lead us toward obedience, not replace it.

Ask yourself these simple questions:

  • Do I believe Jesus loves me? Then I can live each day with confidence in His grace.
  • Do I know Christ has called me to love others? Then I can show kindness, forgiveness, and compassion in my words and actions.
  • Do I believe my heavenly Father is faithful and all-powerful? Then I can trust Him instead of being controlled by fear.

Living out these truths is where faith becomes visible. God is pleased when His children faithfully practice what He has already taught them.

Why does obedience lead to deeper fellowship with Jesus?

If your desire is to know Jesus more deeply, begin by faithfully walking in the truth you already understand. As you obey Him, He continues to shape your heart, strengthen your faith, and reveal more of His character. Growth often comes one faithful step at a time.

There is also humility in recognizing that we never outgrow the basics of the gospel. We continually return to the love of Christ, trusting Him daily and following where He leads. As we remain faithful to what we have already attained, our relationship with Him becomes stronger, richer, and more joyful.

Today, instead of wondering what new lesson God may have for you tomorrow, ask Him to help you faithfully live the truth He has already placed in your heart. As you do, you will find that every step of obedience brings you closer to the Savior who has been leading you all along.
