Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us. – Ephesians 3:20

God’s power is already at work in us, yet Paul says it reaches beyond everything we can ask or imagine. That is a striking thought because our prayers are often shaped by what we can see, understand, and believe might actually happen. God is not limited by the boundaries of our imagination.

More than we can imagine

We tend to measure possibilities by what we already know. We look at the circumstances in front of us, consider the resources available, and try to picture how things might turn out. Even when we pray with faith, our prayers can still be shaped by those limits.

Paul gives us a much bigger view of God.

He does not simply say that God can answer our requests. He says God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. There is no measuring line long enough to contain what God is capable of doing. Our thoughts can reach only so far, but His power does not stop where our understanding ends.

That does not mean God will give us everything we want. It means His ability is never confined by the size of our request or the limits of our imagination. We may see one possible path while God sees countless others. We may ask for one thing when His work is reaching into places we have not even considered.

His power is already at work

The verse becomes even more personal when Paul says this immeasurable power is at work within us.

God’s power is not merely something we admire from a distance. The God who is able to do more than we can imagine is presently working in His people. His work may not always look dramatic. Sometimes it is seen in a growing faith, a changed attitude, a willingness to forgive, or a quiet strength to keep following when the way ahead is unclear.

A shepherd does not need to explain every turn in the path to the sheep. The sheep simply needs to stay close to the shepherd. In much the same way, we do not need to understand everything God is doing before we can trust Him.

There may be prayers we have carried for a long time without seeing the answer we hoped for. There may be situations that seem too complicated to change. Ephesians 3:20 does not promise that everything will unfold according to our timetable. It gives us something deeper: confidence in the God whose power is greater than what we can see.

Let God be greater than your expectations

Our imagination can be helpful, but it can also become a quiet boundary around what we believe God can do. We picture the best outcome we can conceive, then unconsciously assume that must be the limit of hope.

Paul invites us to lift our eyes higher.

God may work through an answer we never expected. He may change something within us before He changes something around us. He may lead us along a path we would never have chosen and use it for purposes we could not have imagined.

So bring your requests to Him. Bring the things you can clearly explain, and the things you cannot. Ask boldly, but leave room for God to be God. His power is not measured by our faith, our understanding, or the size of our dreams.

The God we trust is able to do immeasurably more. And that power is already at work within us.
