Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. – Proverbs 4:23
What does the word “heart” mean?
When we speak of the heart, we are talking about who we are on the inside. It is the place of our thoughts, passions, feelings, desires, and emotions. Everything we do flows from our heart, shaping the way we live and respond to the world around us.
Guarding the Heart
As children of God, we are deeply loved. Yet we must be careful to protect who we are inside. A good intention can quickly shift because of a selfish thought. Our passions can lead us down the wrong path. Acts of kindness can fade into jealousy or envy. Even our desires can be pulled in unhealthy directions. This is why Scripture calls us to keep watch over our hearts.
Overcoming Our Old Ways
Protecting the heart requires humility and attentiveness. We cannot ignore the fact that we have all struggled with selfishness and mistakes from our past. But God has not left us there. Through redemption in Christ, we are given a new beginning.
The Spirit Who Changes Us
The Holy Spirit works within us to renew our hearts. He reshapes our thoughts, passions, feelings, desires, and emotions so they are filled with love for God and others. What once was driven by selfishness is transformed by His power. The Spirit Himself becomes our protector, guarding our hearts with His grace.
