Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. – 1 Corinthians 13:6
Have you ever enjoyed hearing about someone else “getting what they deserve”?
Even more so if it’s someone who has wronged us, or rubs us the wrong way. We haven’t acted or done anything spiteful to them, but we find that little pleasure of hearing of their difficulties.
Love Rejoices in Truth
True love does not delight in the misfortune of others. Love rejoices in truth, and God’s truth is more than just seeing things as they are. It is viewing every situation through the lens of His grace, mercy, and love. Hearing that someone has failed or been caught in wrongdoing should not bring joy, because we know that sin exists in our own hearts as well.
God’s Truth for All
God’s truth reminds us that every person falls short and is in need of forgiveness. It tells us that He loves us deeply and has made a way for us to leave behind selfish living. His truth also assures us that He actively reaches out to offer His love and restoration.
Following the Example of Jesus
Jesus sought out people who were sinful, hurting, and abandoned. He extended compassion instead of condemnation. In the same way, when we see the flaws and failures in others, it should move us to extend forgiveness, grace, and love.
Choosing the Source of Our Joy
We must decide whether our joy will come from the sins and setbacks of others or from the truth of God’s love for us all. Lasting joy is found in aligning our hearts with His truth and celebrating His mercy at work in every life. Let us rejoice with the truth.
