We love because He first loved us. – 1 John 4:19

Why do Christians love God and love others? The Bible gives a simple and powerful answer: our love is a response. We do not create love on our own or earn God’s affection through our efforts. Instead, the love we show flows from the love God has already shown us. Long before we understood it, God’s heart was already turned toward us.

What Does 1 John 4:19 Teach Us About the Source of Love?

1 John 4:19 reveals a foundational truth about the Christian life. Love does not begin with us. It begins with God. Every act of genuine love traces back to the moment God chose to love humanity.

Before the world existed, God already knew us and cared for us. When He created the universe and set history in motion, His love was already part of His plan. From the very beginning, God’s relationship with humanity was rooted in grace, not in our performance.

God’s love was present when He formed us in the womb and gave us life. It was evident when He provided for our needs and guided our steps. Most clearly, His love was revealed when He sent His Son so that we could be forgiven and restored to Him.

This verse reminds us that God’s love is always the first move. Our love is simply the response.

God Has Shown His Love Throughout Our Lives!

God’s love is not just an idea found in Scripture. It is something that unfolds throughout every stage of our lives.

Before we ever searched for Him, God was already reaching out to us. His love shaped the story of creation, guided the flow of history, and worked through countless moments that brought us closer to Him.

When we struggle, God’s love still surrounds us with grace and patience. When we fall short, His love offers forgiveness. When we feel uncertain about the future, His love reminds us that He is preparing something far greater than we can see right now.

Every blessing, every moment of mercy, and every opportunity for a fresh start points back to the same truth: God loved us first.

How Should We Respond to God’s Love Today?

When we truly understand that God loved us first, it changes how we live. Love becomes more than a feeling. It becomes our response to the grace we have received.

We love God by trusting Him, worshiping Him, and seeking His presence in our daily lives. We love others by showing patience, kindness, forgiveness, and compassion.

The Christian life is not about trying to earn God’s approval. It is about living in response to the love He has already given. When we remember that His love came first, gratitude grows in our hearts and love naturally flows outward.

Because God loved us first, we can love Him. Because He showed us grace, we can extend grace to others. His love becomes the beginning of every act of love we share.
