Chase after what is good

Make sure that no one repays evil for evil. Always pursue what is good for one another and for all people. – 1 Thessalonians 5:15

It’s time to practice abstinence… from ill will.

It is easy to fall into the trap of resentment when someone wrongs us. Our human instinct is to plan how we might get even or plot ways to turn the tables. Yet this cycle of retaliation is rooted in pride, in believing we are somehow better than others.

Remembering We Are All Sinners

The person you may feel tempted to strike back against is a sinner just like you. We are all broken, and we all fall short. Both you and that person are loved by God and covered by His grace. Knowing this truth should stop us in our tracks. How could we seek to do evil in return when the Lord commands us to love instead?

Love Is the Better Response

The way someone treats you has no bearing on how you are called to treat them. God’s Word is clear: we are to respond in love, even when wronged. Love does not retaliate, and it does not seek harm. Love reflects Christ, who gave Himself for us while we were still sinners.

Pursuing What Is Good

Instead of dwelling on payback, God invites us to actively chase after what is good. Do not wait for opportunities to appear but seek them out. Look for ways to meet the needs of others. Bring kindness where there is pain, encouragement where there is discouragement, and love where there is conflict. Run after goodness and let your actions reflect the heart of Christ.
