How great You are, O Lord God! For there is none like You, and there is no God but You, according to everything we have heard with our own ears. – 2 Samuel 7:22
David does not simply say that God is great. He says there is no one like Him. After all David had seen and heard of God’s faithfulness, the only fitting response was wonder at the Lord Himself.
There Is No One Like God
David had received promises from God that were far greater than anything he could have accomplished on his own. Instead of focusing on what he might build for God, David found himself overwhelmed by what God had already done and promised to do. His attention turned away from himself and toward the Lord.
That is often where worship begins. We become so familiar with the things God provides that we can forget to stop and consider the One who provides them. But when we pause and look again at His character, His faithfulness, and His works, our perspective changes. God is not simply one source of help among many. There is none like Him.
God’s Greatness Is Bigger Than We Can See
We will never be able to take in everything about God. His greatness reaches beyond what our minds can measure. Yet He has made Himself known. Scripture tells us of His power, mercy, holiness, patience, and steadfast love. We hear what He has done, and then we begin to recognize those same qualities in the story of our own lives.
Even ordinary things can become reminders:
- A quiet answer to prayer.
- Strength for a difficult day.
- Forgiveness when we have failed.
- Peace that arrives when circumstances have not changed.
None of these things makes God suddenly great. They simply give us another glimpse of the greatness that was already there.
What Happens When We See Him More Clearly?
David’s response was not complicated. He worshiped. Seeing God more clearly made him less occupied with his own importance and more attentive to the Lord’s glory.
There is a quiet humility in that. Like a sheep looking to its shepherd, we are not required to understand everything before we trust the One leading us. We can admit that God is greater than our understanding and still rest in what He has revealed about Himself.
Perhaps today you do not need to find something impressive to say about God. You may simply need to pause long enough to remember who He is. He is faithful when you cannot see what comes next. He is merciful when you fall short. He is present when life feels uncertain. And there is no one like Him.
David had heard what God had done, and it moved him to worship. We can do the same. The more we turn our attention from ourselves to the Lord, the more naturally our hearts begin to say, with wonder and humility, “How great You are.”
