I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. – Philippians 4:12-13
How do we truly learn something well? Most often it is through experience. Reading and listening are valuable, but when life lessons are stamped on our heart and mind, it is usually because we have lived through them. Experience is what shapes wisdom and strengthens faith.
The Secret of Contentment
We often assume that the lessons of faith come only through hardship. While this is certainly true, the apostle Paul reminds us that he learned from both sides of life. He knew what it was to be in need, and he also knew what it was to have plenty. In both situations he discovered the secret of contentment.
Finding Gratitude in Abundance
Paul described contentment as a secret, something rare and precious. He learned how to be satisfied when he lacked resources, but just as importantly, he learned to be satisfied when he had more than enough. We might think abundance is easy, yet it is often in times of plenty that we forget to give thanks, overlook God’s provision, and chase after more instead of resting in gratitude.
Strength in Every Season
Paul knew that God’s strength was necessary not only to endure trials but also to remain thankful in abundance. Gratitude in times of blessing keeps the heart humble and reminds us that everything comes from God. True contentment grows out of thanksgiving, no matter the circumstances.
God Provides and Sustains
Through experience Paul discovered that God always provides. The Lord gives the strength to endure seasons of need and the grace to remain thankful in times of plenty. Contentment is not found in what we have, but in trusting the One who provides all that we need.
