More than that, I count all things as loss compared to the surpassing excellence of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ. – Philippians 3:8

What truly holds the greatest value in your life? When we pause to think about it, most of us can list many blessings—family, work, friendships, and comfort. Yet when compared to the infinite worth of knowing Jesus, everything else suddenly looks small. Deep in our hearts, we know that nothing can match the love, joy, and forgiveness that flow from our relationship with Him. Still, it’s easy to live as though other things matter more.

What distractions keep us from treasuring Jesus above all?

Many of us cling to things that fill our schedules and shape our priorities. We hold tightly to our homes, our jobs, our routines, even our hobbies and relationships. These are good gifts from God, but they become harmful when they start to take His place in our hearts. Jesus never asked to be one item on a long list of loves—He calls us to make Him our first and greatest devotion. When we let worldly pursuits crowd Him out, we miss the joy of truly walking with the One who is the source of all good things.

How does Paul’s life show us what truly matters?

The apostle Paul understood this truth through personal experience. Before encountering Christ, Paul had everything the world could offer—education, reputation, and power. He was admired, respected, and successful by every human measure. But after meeting Jesus, his perspective changed completely. Suddenly, all his achievements seemed worthless compared to the surpassing joy of knowing the Savior. What once defined him became “rubbish,” as he put it, when set beside the beauty of life in Christ.

What does it mean to find our treasure in Christ alone?

When Paul says that all things are loss compared to knowing Jesus, he isn’t rejecting the good things of life—he’s putting them in their proper place. Nothing else can satisfy the deepest longing of the soul. Jesus alone offers forgiveness, peace, and the promise of eternal life. When we center our hearts on Him, we discover that every other treasure fades in comparison. Knowing Christ isn’t just better—it’s everything.

So today, take a quiet moment and ask yourself what you’re holding onto too tightly. Whatever it is, it can never compare to the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus as Lord. True joy is found not in what we possess, but in who possesses us.
