Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. – 2 Corinthians 3:12
Paul makes a connection between hope and boldness. He does not say that boldness comes from having all the answers or knowing what lies ahead. It grows from having a hope strong enough to stand when the future is uncertain.
Hope Changes the Way We Stand
Paul’s confidence is not rooted in favorable circumstances. He has been speaking about the glory of the new covenant and the work God is doing through Christ. Then comes this simple conclusion: because we have such a hope, we are very bold.
That word “hope” carries weight. Christian hope is not a vague feeling that things might eventually turn out well. It is confidence in what God has done and in what He has promised. We may not know what tomorrow will bring, but we know the One who holds tomorrow.
That changes something in us. Uncertainty may still be uncomfortable, and difficult circumstances may still hurt, but they no longer have to determine how we live.
Boldness Does Not Require Fearlessness
Sometimes we imagine a bold Christian as someone who never hesitates, never worries, and never feels afraid. Paul’s words point somewhere better. Our boldness does not have to come from a naturally fearless personality. It can come from hope.
A sheep does not need to understand every turn in the path to keep following the shepherd. It needs to know who is leading it. In much the same way, we can take the next faithful step without having the whole road mapped out before us.
There will be days when courage feels strong and days when it feels very small. Neither changes the foundation of our hope. Our confidence rests in Christ, not in our ability to feel confident.
Hope Gives Us a Reason to Speak and Live
Paul’s boldness was not simply an inward feeling. It gave him freedom to live openly for Christ. When our hope is anchored in Him, we are less concerned with protecting ourselves from every possible disappointment and more willing to love, serve, speak truth, and remain faithful.
That kind of courage can be quiet. It may look like choosing faithfulness when nobody notices, offering kindness when it would be easier to withdraw, or speaking about Christ without being ashamed. Boldness does not always make a lot of noise. Sometimes it simply keeps going.
And perhaps that is where this verse meets us today. We do not have to manufacture courage before we begin. We can look again at the hope we have been given and let that hope steady us.
Such a Hope
Paul says, “since we have such a hope.” He seems almost to point us back to the hope itself. Look at what God has given you in Christ. Look at what cannot be taken away. Then stand there.
Our circumstances may change. Our plans may change. We may not know what the next season will hold. But the hope we have in Christ remains a sure place for the heart to rest.
So we can live boldly today, not because we know what is coming, but because we know where our hope is. Christ is enough to give us courage for the next step.
