Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. – Joshua 1:9
What keeps you from growing in your walk with Jesus? For many believers, the answer is fear or discouragement. Both can quietly stop us from moving forward in faith. Yet Joshua 1:9 reminds us that God has not left us to face life’s challenges alone. The Lord answers our fears and discouragement with a powerful promise: He is with us wherever we go. Because of His presence, we can find courage, strength, and confidence to continue following Him.
Why does God connect fear and discouragement in Joshua 1:9?
Fear and discouragement often work together. Fear causes us to hesitate before taking a step of faith, while discouragement tempts us to give up after we have already begun. One keeps us from starting, and the other keeps us from continuing.
God knew Joshua would face overwhelming responsibilities and difficult challenges. As Joshua prepared to lead God’s people, the Lord addressed both dangers directly. He commanded Joshua not to be afraid and not to be discouraged. The same truth applies to us today. Whether we are facing uncertainty, disappointment, or a difficult season, God calls us to trust Him rather than surrender to fear.
How can we be strong and courageous when we feel weak?
At first glance, God’s command may seem impossible. How can we be strong when we feel exhausted? How can we be courageous when fear seems overwhelming?
The answer is found in the second half of the verse. God does not tell Joshua to rely on his own abilities. Instead, He points Joshua to His presence. The source of courage is not self-confidence but God-confidence.
Just as sheep find safety near their shepherd, believers find strength by staying close to the Lord. Our courage grows when we remember who walks beside us. The Creator of the universe is not distant or unaware of our struggles. He is present, guiding, protecting, and sustaining His people every step of the way.
God promises to be with us wherever we go!
The word “go” carries an important message. God never intended Joshua to stand still. He was called to move forward in obedience, trusting God with each step.
The same is true for us. Following Christ is a journey of continual faith. Along the way, we may experience setbacks, failures, and situations that genuinely frighten us. There will be moments when discouragement tries to convince us that progress is impossible.
Yet God’s promise remains unchanged. Wherever He leads us, He goes with us. His presence is not limited by circumstances, locations, or seasons of life. Whether we are celebrating victories or walking through trials, the Lord remains faithful.
How can we apply Joshua 1:9 to our daily lives?
Joshua 1:9 encourages us to keep moving forward with faith. When fear whispers that we are not capable, we can remember that God is with us. When discouragement tells us to quit, we can hold firmly to His promises.
Each day offers new opportunities to trust the Lord. We do not need to know every detail of the path ahead. We simply need to walk faithfully with Him. His power is greater than our fears, and His love is stronger than our discouragement.
If you are facing a challenge today, take heart. The God who encouraged Joshua is the same God who walks with His people now. Keep moving forward in faith, knowing that wherever you go, the Lord your God is with you.
